I'm a little skeptical that these checks are going to stimulate our economy. Especially given the state of the housing market, the financial crisis, and rising gas prices.

You realise that these "Stimulus Rebates" are in fact "Advances" on next years rebates? That means you owe the government the amount of that rebate check + interest on next years tax returns.
Oh and btw, HYPER INFLATION FTW! enjoy your chinese products

Really???? I didn't know that! That is total crap!
Posted by: Paula May 6th, 08:09
As a non-USer I have a question. Or questions:
How much money did each person get and who got the money - everybody or jus some ppl and how did they decide who to give money to if it was not population wide?
Posted by: Hein May 6th, 08:21
I think these stimulus checks are a stupid idea, but stop spreading rumors - the 2008 stimulus check is NOT AN ADVANCE ON YOUR RETURN.

The bothersome part is that the people that pay the most in taxes do not get a rebate, while people that pay no taxes get the most "rebate." Reminds me of that parabol:

Posted by: Jason May 6th, 15:06
It's not exactly an advance, but will be considered income, the same as a tax refund, and with the collapsing dollar, 600 today might be more at the end of the year, when I am turning tricks for foodstamps
Posted by: detaoist May 6th, 15:11
I sure hope you folks who ran out and bought new stuff with your free money stay home on election day.
Posted by: ZMan May 6th, 16:27
nice idea.
Posted by: Ron Michaels May 6th, 16:49
Why do i need to stay home on election day? Just because I choose to spend my extra money on a vacation? It is my choice as to what to do with the money that is given. I did not ask for this stimulus check, it was given to me and I will choose what I want to do with it. I am sorry if I have a good job, low credit card debt and a fuel efficient car. I am allowed to have some fun this year.

Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?
A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.
Q. If my stimulus payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?
A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received. [New 4/11/08]
Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?
A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Seeing as how the government doesn't make any money of its own, but taxes it away from the people who actually work, I for one am glad to get a bit of my own money back. It's like the opposite of tax-and-spend!
Posted by: Stim-Sal May 7th, 13:09
Hein,
Each single person that made under $75,000 in 2007 gets $600. A Married couple that made under $150,000 in 2007 gets $1200. There is a $300 addition for each child. For incomes over $75,000/$150,000 there is some formula that calculates how much less you get depending on how much more you earned. My wife and I made just under 6 figures combined last year, and we have 2 kids. We will get $1800.
The only qualification for getting a stimulus check is that you filed your income taxes for 2007.

We didn't get ours yet. We have a 40 yr old handicap son and are raising 3 grandchildren.
I was going to use it to pay a credit card but we have a grandson getting married in san antonio so we are counting on the refund for that. we live in louisiana.
he just graduated from college and we couldn't afford to go so we have to go to the wedding.
We didn't get ours yet. Did anyone get theirs.
Posted by: susan May 8th, 18:49
we could use the money to set up meical coverage for the people who have none
Posted by: Bilie May 9th, 18:51
Do one of two things with your rebate.
1) Put it into savings, if done en masse this will assist the banking industry which got us into this mess.
2) Give the third finger to whole idea and buy a precious metal with the money. That will put it out of circulation, it won't assist the economy, it will devalue the dollar more and perhaps get a real economic stimulus package going that encourages divestment from fossil fuels into carbon-less renewable energy and green collar jobs and infrastructure.
Sincere.
Posted by: Self May 10th, 12:17
The idea of these checks are great, but seeing as how it is already our money does the government think that we are actually thanking them!!!????
Posted by: Jessica May 11th, 11:33
Since my propane budget plan did not cover the whole amount last year due to increased prices-I still another $430 and my new plan will be $252 a month from $140----- HMMMM- what do you think I am going to with my $600- sign the back of it and give to the gas company- that is a no brainer.
Posted by: Mary May 11th, 16:17
These rebates are really a dumb idea. The government will have to borrow more money from foreign governments (like China) to do this, increasing our public debt. So when you spend it at Walmart, China makes out coming and going!
Posted by: Tim May 11th, 20:24
Billie, you are wrong about your second comment. What we should be doing is drilling for OUR OWN oil, so we are not depending on hostile countries for our energy supplies! There is no free lunch! The so-called green energy like biofuels actually INCREASE carbon emissions by increasing deforestation and actually costs MORE to make than gasoline.
Posted by: Tim May 11th, 20:31
I,m sorry for a person with one child the most you can get is about $900.00 if that, & with gas being so so outragous right now & going up every day, you better be smart & save as much as much as you can for that. Sooner than later from the looks of it, we won't be able to afford to get to work everyday. What is 900.00 going to stimulate me to do? buy gas with it
Posted by: C.C. May 12th, 14:41
Tim, instead of drilling for our own oil, we need to figure out how to get off of oil altogether. I don't have much problem with drilling in ANWR (I've actually been there), but don't think for a second that that is the solution to the problem. We need a comprehensive overhaul of our entire energy system in this country. I think that massive investment in nuclear energy (including breeder reactors which will make fuel out of nuclear "waste"), as well as wind, solar, geothermal, CO2 sequestration technology, fuel cells, etc. In other words, as Congressman Jay Inslee calls it, a "New Apollo Energy Project." We put several men on the moon 40 years ago, surely we can figure out how to solve this energy crisis and stop sending money (and the lives of our troops!) to unstable portions of the world.
Anyway, I agree that this stimulus package is stupid -- nothing like borrowing a bunch of money from foreign countries and giving it to your citizens to make them think that all is well! Our grandkids will still be paying off the debt from this administration 100 years from now. I thought Republicans were supposed to be the "fiscally responsible" party! HA!
Posted by: Poopyhead May 15th, 15:14
I think that it is absolutely ludacris that students, like myself, that go to school fulltime and carry a job and work incredibly hard do not qualify for economic stimulus checks because we are eligible to be claimed by our parents. However, people who do not attend a higher education school after high school get an economic stimulus check. It's like punishing kids for going to college! Not getting the three hundred dollars isn't even what bothers me, its that people who don't work and get food stamps and live off the government get a stimulus check where students who are trying to do something with their life do not. Good luck government..getting out economy "stimulated" by giving more free money to people who live off of you anyway!
Posted by: Donna May 19th, 13:21
Stim-Sal- Government is a service. It is a necessary evil (to an extent, then it becomes unnecessary). Protection in exchange for tax revenue.
Drilling in ANWR is a very short term solution. Won't last us long enough. I say we keep ANWR as an emergency short-term in case we run into a nasty situation and work on developing long-term solutions.
Enjoy your Chinese loan, people.

It's also sad to see these same people mocking this money and the government when, to me, it appeared the gov was trying to do a little good. But instead the money is being used by idiots that truly NEED the gov to spend their money for them. Sad...and you people actually think you are being funny when actually you just look ignorant.

I JUST RECIEVED MY CHECK. WELL,HERE IS THE DEAL. I MADE LESS THAN $75,000 LAST YEAR. I AM SINGLE. I WAS EXPECTING $600. WRONG!!! $300 CHECK??? WHAT IS THAT ABOUT? SO, FOR ALL OF YOU EXPECTING THE $6OO DO NOT BE SURPRISED!!!
Posted by: D.R.M.C. May 28th, 11:51
Burial property is forever so I spent it on that.
Posted by: skint May 28th, 12:41
D.R.M.C. YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN $600 UNLESS YOU PAID IN LESS THAN $600 Taxes for 2007. If you got less than $600 you must have paid only $300 in taxes! Reply if this is not the case?
Posted by: CURIOUS GEORGE May 28th, 17:33
Ok, here is my deal. I think that this stimulus check was a good idea but came at a bad time. With gas and the economy going down hill every day the checks are only going to help pay for gas, groceries and whatever else people have had to dip into their savings for. Also, I agree with D.R.M.C about not being surprised. My husband, I, and our tax preparer have been appealing with IRS over some back taxes they say we owe due to a mix up over some property we owned some years back. Guess what, I did not get my check. I was planning on giving my 3 kids their 300 in their savings accounts and using a little of my 1200 for bills then saving the rest. My sister works at a bank and has seen many discrepencies in the stimulus checks so I have told people not to expect their checks. Another thing, the government did not tell people that one of my co-workers found out about the week she should have gotten her check. If you filed your taxes online and had your fee deducted out of your refund, but your check was direct deposited, you would be getting a live check. As far as the people who are and are not getting checks. This is just another way for the government to buy off some people and piss off the others. That is our great government for you. I think it is time for Bush to be voted out of office because thanks to him our country has fallen the way it has and he is out to make his account fat before he leaves office. I do not agree that people who collect food stamps and sit on their -ss's all day should have gotten money especially when there are hard working people out there like those of us who got screwed by the government that do not get to see their check. Good luck to those of you who might still be getting a check.

i am single working parent with 1 child that just turned 18. i was expecting to get 600 when i used the online calculater earlier. i received 300 and of course nothing for the child because she was over 17. she also works but did not receive anything either because she can be claimed on my return as a dependent.if the government has anything to do with it there will be all kinds of loopholes.

Well Lets See....I was to recieve a $600.00 stimulus check in June. I recieved a letter from the IRS stating that I owed taxes from 2005. I called the IRS and they explained to me that the retirement check that I recieved in 2005 had not been properly taxed. I explained to them that my retirement had been taxed and they took a whole bunch of taxes before I even recieved my check. Well to my suprise, They informed me that I had to pay taxes again on what I had recieved...I thought it was against the law to double tax. I asked them, why in the Heck they hadn't taken it out of my taxes for the past 3 yrs. Their answer was, they had just found it. So the IRS will be keeping my Stimulas Check...I will never put my money into a retirement fund again...What I save is mine...I worked for it and I shouldn't have to pay someone else for my hard work...

DUE TO A FEW ACCIDENTS ON AND OFF THE JOB THE DOCTORS WILL NOT TREAT MY PROBLEMS. {NO INSURANCE}
AND THE LAWYERS JUST TAKE MY MONEY SO PISS ON THE WHOLE GOVERNMENT MESS THEY CALL A STIMULUS PACKAGE.
LETS FACE IT WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD HAVE A CUT OFF WAGE WHEN THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHOM REALLY NEED IT. I WAS 400 DOLLARS SHORT OF THE MINIMUN OF 3000 DOLLARS TO GET A CHECK OF ONLY 300 . NO WONDER THIS GOVERNMENT CAN NOT BALANCE A BUDGET. THEIR MORONS WITH TOO MUCH MONEY TO SPEND THAT IS NOT THEIRS.
I'LL STARVE BEFORE I TAKE FORIEN MONEY!!!
Posted by: dan May 29th, 21:13
These are not advances on next year rebates and you won't ever owe anything on them. This is simply free money. Don't believe these other idiots who say otherwise. Your taxes next year are not impacted by this at all, and you rebate, if you get one, won't be deducted by this amount. It is tax-free, no-strings-attached money - enjoy it!
Posted by: Michael May 29th, 22:57
I think I'll send my rebate to Mr. War is Fine With Me Bush so he can buy himself a high colonic to clear his brain with.
Posted by: shadowtraveller May 30th, 04:57
I spent my check by buying tickets to a private meet and greet with Hillary R Clinton total $500 then my partner and I went out to dinner and we had a quiet nice dinner.

Every other week on pay day I would fill my tank for $18 to $20. I drive less than 4500 miles per year. Now I fill my tank and it costs about $45. The grocery bills, heating oil, electric bill, water bill, property tax and every other necessity to survival are continually rising. But my paycheck remains the same. I think the government would have done better to ban the practice of cramming pork onto bills -like bridges to nowhere, building of local community museums, and other stupid stuff States should be raising their own money for. And they should REPAY the money they 'appropriated' from Social Security. They play fast and loose with tax dollars (income and Soc. Sec. alike) to fund wars and other dubious agendas while the quality of life for the citizens of this country is going to hell in a hand basket. Bush and his cronies have done more to hurt this country in less than eight years than any previous administration in history. I live in a State where my total tax burden exceeds 38%. How long is $600 going to stretch to cover the rising cost of survival at these criminally inflated rates?
I also did not know that these boneheads borrowed money from China to pull off this stunt. Their brains have been displaced by flatulance.
Posted by: angel May 30th, 06:50
I am using my stimulas $600 to buy 2/3 of an ounce of gold as it will always buy me a station wagon full of groceries and supplies just as it could fill a wagon full of groceries and supplies in the 1890's I hope all of you fools who are buying all these foolish items WAKE UP and realize where all this Government spending by keeping the printing presses open will lead us. DOWN A PATH WE DON'T WANT TO TRAVEL
Posted by: GOLDEN TOUCH May 30th, 13:19
Some of you are very ungrateful while others are just plain ignorant. You get free money and you open your mouth saying how bad an idea it is... What do you even know about economics? If you don't want your stimulus money going to china, feel free to send it to me, an american who didn't need the rebate check one bit, and chose to spend it on my local team that I have loved since i was 5 years old. If i didn't spend it on that, it would have been saved. I chose to actually enjoy it. You don't see me complaining about the government or making false claims regarding the recession we are in. A recession is inveitable. The market will go up, but it will eventually come down. However, it will go up again. These stimulus plans are designed to keep it from staying down too long. Trust me, it could stay there a long time considering the price of gas. That really hurts businesses. However, this boost will help business and American families at the same time. My favorite are the ones who feel cheated that they have to spend their free money to pay bills. I don't know everyone's economic situation, but im guessing the complainers out there have nobody to blame but themselves... yet they choose the easy target... the government. Have fun.
Posted by: Grateful, NY May 30th, 20:05
The stimulus check was a bad idea in so many ways. The worst part is that our country was already running a huge budget deficit. This monetary give-away makes things worse. Of course, the treasury will just print more dollars to cover the checks that were sent out but that will cause problems for the future generations who will have to pay off this debt. It was a poor idea to undertake but an easy decision to enact by our representatives in an election year.
I sent my stimulus check back to one of my senators with a stinging letter.
Posted by: Turfman May 31st, 10:21
I think the wole thing is a total joke! Yeah I got $600 but like that is gonna really help! I will spend that in a few months just on gas! Which im my eyes gas should just be around $1.50 if you average its inflation over time! It did take almost 90 yrs to hit $1.00 & less then a decade to triple!!but anyway How about no sales tax on food or hell give the americans 1 month TAX FREE across the board I.e No sales Tax,Income,Luxury,Gas, We already have Tax Holidays for school related items why not a month! I think the economy will not change one bit a few o.2 more percent.. And make cuts or better rules to protect our economy from people draining it on Food Stamps & Housing Vouchers...Like maybe you can use the system for a set amount of years or your in college or trying to better yourself some other means! Or else your off of it! I mean the last time I was in Walmart their was a family 3 with one kid & they had a Shopping cart full of grocery's & I mean full!! But here I was with just enough money to get what I needed & I heard their total of $245 & they pulled out a foodstamp card & owed only $10.45 I was outraged to see around $500-$800 cash! & this is not the 1st time I have seen it..yeah they might of had their stimulas payment but come on..Watched that family get in their Lexus LS 400 maybe a 95-98 model on foodstamps!!Things like that need to be cut!! I would rather have long term fixes then short term fixes any day!!

We used our stimulus check..... OH WAIT My husband and I didn't get one. We live within our means, have no debts save our house, and have savings. We were going to use the money to take a vacation in June. We don't get a stimulus check because immigration hasn't finished with my husband's paperwork. We filed 3 years ago and have another 2 to 3 years to go. Until then I thought we would get my $600 plus $300 for our child. Not so fast... The way the law was written having 1 non social security member of the household disqualifies everyone. We pay taxes and qualified on every other account for it. The irony is we got our notice about the stimulus check in the same week we had to go pay immigration another $340. These checks just make me bitter.

The submissions from people who have shared with readers how they have spent their rebate checks is a perfect sampling of what is wrong with the mindset of the average American. First, let me say that these rebates are nothing more than a stalling tactic by W to delay proof of the recession were are experiencing. The fools who spend their rebates on season tickets, flat screens, etc. are part of the gameplan. Keep the economy chugging along until the current administration can ease off the stage, preparing to blame the next administration for the economic downfall of this country. I will not feel sorry for any of the people when they lose their jobs, fall behind on their mortgages and cannot feed their 5 or 6 kids. Yes, one should enjoy life, but consumerism is NOT the answer. It is the problem. Never in history has a president urged Americans to spend money on frivolous crap while at war. These same fools will be the first ones to whine when they have to wait in line for gas, or worse yet, food.
Posted by: Amazed Jun 1st, 05:52
My husband and I have 1 child and qualified for $900. Which we received the first week in May. It payed for my gas back and forth to work for 3 1/2 weeks. So it only slightly delayed the mess we are in thanks to high gas and food prices. Everyone I know personally had to do the same thing with theirs. So the stimulus checks mostly helped the oil companies who are already making record profits. So while the rest of the people in this country are going further down the drain, the oil companies are going higher above the water line. Who is going to drown first? We are, the little people who make this country the US.

We got our $1,200.00 check. We went to Las Vegas. After 2 days of blackjack, sports bets and craps after all expenses left with $5,850.00. I then bought 335 shares of Nuveen Real Estate Income Fund (JRS). It pays $2.00 per share dividend. 335 x 2= $670.00 per year. So it all turns out to 55% yearly return on the original $1,200.00. Put that in your stimulus package.

Idunning is obviously a poor republican hater who will always be poor and can't stand that once this recession is SHORTENED (notice i did not say ended) by this stimulus program, she won't have anyone else to blame but herself and her poor choices. I am one of the 'fools' who spent my measely $600 on sports tickets. Well not even 600 of it, but part of it went to sports tickets. What am i supposed to do? I didn't even need the check, so i spent it on something i enjoy. And enough of your 'world is ending' Save that for your job on the side of the street with the sign over your head. I work in a service where a) i don't have to worry about losing my job due to a decline in the economy and b) where 600 is nice but doesn't really affect me too much anyway. I'm sorry that you're not in the same position as I am, but who's fault is that? If you still don't know the answer, take a look in the mirror.

Thanks for giving us OUR tax money back. Jeez, what a deal. I overpay my taxes and give the congressional nuts an interest free loan. What a way to manage money. I am looking to buy a foreclosure at an auction in the next few weeks. I will take the home of some foolish smuck that took a 1% teaser rate ARM and overpaid for a home they couldn't afford in the first place. Your pain. My gain.

Save the money. Bush and the neo-cons believe that tax cuts instead of complex, creative, intelligent policymaking will solve every problem. I think the biggest problem facing the U.S.A. is not energy, it is not terrorism, it is not anything external. It is the lifestyle of debt. Consumer ignorance. Mass-marketing designed to brainwash Americans into buying anything and everything and not being at all concerned about what we do tomorrow. We need to relean thrift, how to save money, how to invest money for ourselves and for our country. Learn how to save. Learn how to invest. Enrich yourself. God bless America!

* You are single and your net income tax liability is less than $600. If you file Form 1040 net income tax liability is the amount shown on Line 57, plus the amount on Line 52.
* You are married and your net income tax liability is less than $1,200.
* You are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $75,000. On Form 1040, AGI is the amount on Line 37.
* You are married filing a joint return and your AGI is more than $150,000.
* You owe back taxes that reduced your payment.
* You have non-tax federal debts such as unpaid student loans or child-support obligations that reduced your payment.

Vacation???? I cant afford one anymore, I HAVE to get my house insulated becuase my shoe-box sized house is not even affordable to heat due to the high and speedy increase in OIL to heat the place, I might just break even on the cost of oil if I invest that in insulation THIS year. I dont even have time to save to pay out that much, but I have no choice since I won't ever be able to pay off the oil bill if I don't. Guess those with nice big pockets who make soo much off us little guys can fill me in on their vacations with their kids since I can't pull it off now......... and this house is so small I doubt we can downsize any smaller....GO FIGURE!

Has anyone stopped to ask, "Where did the money for these checks come from?"
It isn't a "refund" of anything - it's robbing Peter to pay Paul. The United States Government took another huge loan from the Federal Reserve, payable with interest, in your names, your childrens' names, and your grandchildrens' names.
Bush bankrupted the United States with his criminal machinations, so there isn't any money to pay for anything, especially not these "stimulus" checks.

Peeved, that wasn't me that was whining about being a student and not getting a check. That was Donna. Unfortunately, this site has a confusing format -- the name of the person who posts a message appears UNDERNEATH the message itself, set apart by lines that make it confusing. To solve the problem, the line really should be UNDERNEATH the poster's name.
This isn't the first time I've seen misattributions on here. Oh well, too late for the admins to fix it now I guess.

Let me add my voice to the chorus of hardworking people who did NOT get a "stiumulus" check. Despite the fact that I pay more in taxes than most people make in a year, I am considered "too rich" for a check that is SUPPOSED to be "stimulating" the economy. Never mind the fact that the people who can most "stimulate" the economy are those like myself -- debt-free and affluent -- who would be most likely to use that check not to pay bills or buy gas, but actually STIMULATE the economy by splurging on an iPod, a chair, or a couple pair of shoes.

I just got mine and I'm going to have fun with every bit of it. Unless you want to be taxed to death and stay on the OPEC tit, vote Republican when given the chance. Otherwise Carter will get his second term. I remember the first and it sucked.

While all of you are enjoying or complaining about your rebates think about this. I am a single mother of 3 and because of a car accident haven't been able to work for 3 yrs. In my divorce it states I claim the kids for taxes. Since I can't file (no income except $167/wk in child support and been fighting for SSI), I'll bet you their father is claiming them, even though the kids only see him about 13 hrs/wk. They live with me but I won't see any of the $300/per child. I'll bet Bush didn't think of that scenario when he made the decision to send rebates. Be thankful YOU got something
Posted by: Denise Jun 12th, 22:22
Denise, I'm sorry about your situation.
But these are not "rebates", nor are they charity checks. They are STIMULUS checks, intended to stimulate the economy.

I love Mr.Bush..I am an immigrant and I will be spending the money paying for the fees in order to become an American citizen....Good for him, good for America !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Claudia Jun 13th, 14:19
I hate Bush. This is one last Gag in hopes to win some love from the people. You can't buy happiness or people. Bush has been one big screw-up from day one. Giving me some dough won't change my opinion of him.

After browsing though some of the posts, I noticed that for people who made "too much" money, or who owed taxes or student loans did not get stimulus checks, or had theirs go to some debt. I think that's wrong. EVERYBODY should have gotten this check. No exceptions. This is an "Economic Stimulus check", not a "Pay your tax-debt or student loan check." How are the folks that didn't get their Econimic Stimulus checks supposed to "stimulate the economy?!! Uncle Sam got greedy.
Posted by: Gregory Jun 13th, 20:48
Economic stimulus? For Saudi Arabia and China? Government should have created construction jobs and paid for repair of infrastructure that is collapsing. What a waste of money this stimulus package was. So, throw the people some crumbs and delay their foreclosure another month? Just another way to mess with the economic statistics as well as a dumb and disconnected move on the part of our so called representatives.
Posted by: Kurt Jun 14th, 22:34
Well I agree the American government is fundamentally damaged but to complain and cry about getting free money is quite silly don't you think? Regardless of what you may or may not believe the money received is no less free for "YOU" and all people in all modern countries must pay taxes on their income so getting that back is like a bonus for being a citizen who pays taxes. Now instead of complaining about a broken government, become a politician and change the way American politics work today- try to make good decisions yourself and make a change-- or raise your kids well and then they can become politicians, at the very least VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION because not voting, does not help anyone-- except people who want to skate by.
If I had gotten money I would've either invested it in my business or donated it to an Israeli relief fund. After all, they actually have missiles flying over their roofs and killing their citizens (unlike us all comfy on our gigantic continent)-- so stop complaining, you know we got it better than everyone else on this god forsaken planet.
Posted by: Corin Jun 15th, 00:51
Corin, you're right. This money wasn't "free". It came from the "haves" and went to the "have-nots" ... taken out of the coffers filled by people like myself (who pays more in taxes each year than most of these people earn in a year), who got NO "stimulus" check.
You're welcome.
Posted by: TVWriter Jun 15th, 08:39
I'm a Have-Not, and I would thank you Corin..but I can't, because Uncle Sam Took my 1200 dollars stimulus check to apply towards an old college loan for $2,500 that I have probably paid back $5000 over the years but yet they tell me I still owe them $2100? oh, btw..Im also a single mom with two teenage boys and the ex owes me over $15,000 in back child support, but gee golly, govt. cant seem to find him and make him pay towards his responsibilities, but they can sure find me, the mother, and make sure I pay towards my responsibilities!!! Uncle Sam...Thank Corin!!
Posted by: robbee Jun 15th, 20:11
We get exactly $1200 dollars and guess where it's going.
Right into a chapter 7 bankruptcy. If we would have received the $1800 that at first we were expecting then we may have atleast spent a hundred or so on something foolish.
Should have had seven kids then we'd be seeing an amount that would be worth something.

My parents got screwed by this "stimulus" check. My dad is a quadriplegic disabled veteran, but wasn't disabled during his service. He worked and retired from GM and one year later fell and broke his neck horsing around with my little brother in the front yard.
Because he's a vet he goes to the VA hospital, has been for 16 years. Even though my parents are on a fixed income with SSI and pension, they still pay the hospital bills. The VA keeps finding old charges- ie. "we discovered that you weren't properly billed for xxx in 98" every time my folks get caught up. So the VA takes money out of my dad's SSI and their income tax whenever and for how much they decide.
My parents were really looking forward to the $600 they were getting combined. The VA got to it first and left them with less than half, even though my mom paid the VA's monthly charge. They had some really important things planned for that money- the 16 year old wheelchair van need repair and their stove broke. My mom was in tears over the loss of the money.
I did all I could do and gave them my check and half of my paycheck. (I live paycheck to paycheck). The van is still not quite right- it runs sometimes, but at least they have a stove.
Since my dad's injury wasn't service connected, he is on the bottom rung at the VA. They made him go 5 years with an unhealed bedsore until it got life threatening and required a year in the hospital to fix. Our government doesn't take care of its vets. My grandfather was a hero in WW2. Since the records from then were burned in a fire, he never received his silver star. He died first.
You'd have to be desperate or nuts to join the military.

I used our $1,200 stimulus check as partial payment on our son's hearing aids. This was not actually a "rebate," just borrowed money to add to the federal deficit.
Posted by: mansobravo Jun 22nd, 22:49
The comment made by the person who said that the govt. is borrowing money to give US, that our children and grandchildren will have to pay off the loan is absolutely correct IMO.
The politicians in our govt. have decided that they will PRESERVE THE GOVT. No matter what it cost the avg citizen. They are working very hard for themselves but what about everyday average people? They don't exist.
So when you vote (or don't vote) this fall remember that the person you are voting for doesn't even know (or care) that you exist.
The economic stimulus check should really be called the ANTI-REVOLUTION check because THAT's what it really is. The rich fat-cats in Washington are scared so they threw us a cookie to eat.
LET THEM EAT CAKE!

If I ever get my check, I will be buying airline tickets so we can visit my husband's family in Salt Lake City for Thanksgiving. While being able to do that is a blessing, I still feel guilty about using that money while our country is on the verge of a recession and while our sons are overseas fighting terrorism. I hope our next President has some brains.

We used our $1800 check to help pay for our trip to London and Paris. I guess that England and France deserve to have their economy stimulated too!
Posted by: Jennifer Jun 29th, 05:21
These so called stimulus checks are suppose to help everyone stimulate the economy. I don't think it is fair that they take it from you if you owe any federal debts, such as student loans. It's bad enough they take our income tax refunds and 15% of my husbands net pay every single week. If the economy was better than he may have been paying on those student loans by now. He went to college and got his degree and then could not find a job. Its sad that he has a college degree and he is an over the road truck driver and does not make enough money for us to make payments on student loans, we barely get by. We were wanting to use the stimulus check to move to a bigger town so that I can find a decent job and he can find work so that he can come off the road and be home with his wife and child, but thanks to the good ole government thats not going to happen now. I really have no faith in them and I think they just want to keep us all down.

BUY PRODUCTS MADE IN THE U.S.A. Avoid places like walmart which have 70% chinese products. We need to stimulate our economy not a foreign one.

I'm a retired Veteran still awaiting my stimulus. From what I've seen, the IRS is getting most of the money back. If you owe the IRS, YOU GET NO STIMULUS PAYMENT !!! What is the reasoning behind that??? How can you stimulate the economy if the IRS is going to keep the measely payments toward back taxes ! Isn't that really defeating the purpose of the whole idea ? Give some comments !!!

Spent on a new plasma TV. The IRS is right, if you owe them or anyone money, they have the right to take it and help pay off your debts. After all your the one who accumilated these debts. About 5 years ago
I owed them and they took my bank accounts, etc...
I didnt complain, because I am the one who was responsible. Everyone should be responsible for their own actions and should not expect anything for free.
Nothing is a free ride!!!!

I saw an article today quoting Adler, stating that even though many of us outwardly blame Bush and the current administration for the economic crisis, we all seem pretty happy to get the stimulus payments. This just burns me up, and seems like the rich politicians are doing one more thing to make fun of the working class of this country.
Of course we're happy to get the stimulus payments, because right now it's too hard to make money any other kind of way. People are losing their jobs, going on welfare and participating in the Food Stamps program like there's no tomorrow. Even people who were well-off, upper middle class are struggling now. And don't even get me started on the business owner end of things. My firm provides services in an industry that would be thriving in any other economy than the current one. But we're making just enough to cover our own costs, no profit to be seen, and I'm still working as hard as ever for peanuts, even though I own my own business!
The fact of the matter is, Bush and this current administration ARE to blame. Had they not made such rash decisions earlier on in this period, our economy might not be suffering so much to warrant these stimulus payments in the first place! It just seems like their way of saying, "Oops, sorry we screwed you, but this should help." And to be honest, it hasn't helped any more than normal tax refunds might have. Sure some folks are able to get a few bills paid down, or put aside some money for gas. But does that looking like economic stimulus? Nope, that's just us trying to get by. And don't forget about those who didn't even receive the full amounts. I got only $300 back because I supposedly didn't earn enough last year. So instead of helping those who didn't or couldn't earn, you punish them? What about people who were laid off and couldn't find work? They just suffer too, I guess...
$600 doesn't go that far in a fairly stable economy. So call me ungrateful, but no, I'm not at all happy with the state of things or the supposed economic stimulus. It didn't do anything for us but make us feel we were getting back more than we actually did. It barely covered rent and a few utilities for our household. If you think a regular, working household can thrive off of $600 or $1200, think again! Unlike the rich who feel that they're giving the rest of us a handout, we have very real bills with very real consequences if they aren't paid on time (many of which the government sets the price on, by the way). I don't see the Bushes or other major political families hurting like any of us. His daughter had a nice little wedding, didn't she? Still traveling all over the world and driving their expensive cars. Perhaps this stimulus helped up to keep our heads above water, but it certainly didn't do any more than that!
Posted by: Struggling Small Business Owner Jun 30th, 11:05
For me, the stimulus check is to pay for the hike of gas prices.
Posted by: ER Jun 30th, 11:06
I agree many of us don't even see this stimulus check. And the poor who are getting it are complaining that is too small and they deserve more. This "bush money" has been more of a problem for many of us who work with the poor class, so stop complaining about free money!
Posted by: unknown Jun 30th, 11:10
There is no such thing as free money.
Posted by: La belle Jun 30th, 14:42
For all of you who thought you were smart enough to cheat the government on your tax returns, you shouldn't complain that you did not receive your full $600. I'm honestly, sick and tired of hearing people whine and whine when they already CLAIM their WORKING 18 year OLDS (who by the way, get paid in cash and avoid taxes), that you did not receive a $600 check for your ADULT child and a partial check while you did not have a JOB. There are many of us who have jobs, have worked hard, paid our PAINFUL taxes, we get no breaks, and $600 doesn't do us any justice after having paid 36% of our borderline income to YOUR tax-cheating jerks.
Frankly, I don't have kids, I don't have a husband, I work hard and I'm the one who gets screwed in every which way because every penny I make gets counted. I didn't go into welfare, I didn't have five children from five different fathers, I don't get medicare, I don't claim for public benefits and now I don't even get a friggin' break while paying off my STUDENT LOANS... and just like everyone, I too, have loans and debts.
So please, stop complaining because I got no sympathy for you. USE a condom next time.

I don't know how mine stimulus was calculated. But it was not in the "single, under $75,000 gets $600" + $300 for every child. If it was then I would have gotten $900. As it was my check was for $600 total including a child, should have been 2. AND it went to an unexpected move, thanks to my landlord deciding to sell the house!

To LaBelle:
I empathize with your statment. I too, am a hardworking (40 hrs a week), single mother, with 3 boys, two of whom are now adults, but still live at home, and I am working on getting my degree in nursing. I've got debt, don't make enough, so I HAVE to have student loans to get me by. If not for that, I'd have to find a job down on the street corner. That's preferable to having to apply for foodstamps, medicare, and any other gov't assisted program out there that wants to know every little detail of my life. NO THANK YOU!!
