  • Spent To Save

"So my wife and I both drive large trucks, and the cost of gas is killing us. So we spent our stimulus check on a moped. This way we'll actually save about $400+ on gas a month. It's like another check every month!"

Groceries - we bought fruit from our local farmers market and made jams and jellies ($140) We finished paying off our Credit Card debt in October of 2007 and now we are working on our student loans!! • We Stimulated Foreign Oil Markets.

"My wife usually takes care of paying the bills. But she gave birth to our second child a few weeks ago and hadn't been keeping track of ALL the bills like usual. We'd planned on using our $1500.00 stimulus check to pay off a small chunk of the maternity expense that our lousy insurance doesn't pay for. So I get a phone call from Phillips 66, and the lady says we're two months behind on our Gas-Card bill. "Would you like to pay using a check-by-phone to avoid late charges?", she asked. "Sure. Why not. How much do we owe?" "The total for the last three months is $1142.46" So we spent most of our stimulus check on foreign oil. Good way to stimulate our economy. Well, who knows? Maybe a Saudi prince will use part of that money to buy a Harley. "

  • Mountain Man - Cut Down In His Prime

"The Mountain Man was rotten, eaten by termites, attacked by woodpeckers, and needed paint job, so we cut him down. We used $320 to give the Mountain Man a proper burial and build a garden over his stump. Since Uncle Sam was so generous, we gave him $560 of his money back (Federal Student Loan payment). Oh, and of course, we spent on our car: $200 brake job, $50 oil job, $370 on gas and there was probably some food in there too. Everybody but the termites and woodpeckers ate well this month!"

  • Stimulating Saudi Arabia's Economy

"My husband has a summer internship in Tennessee, and the school he attends is in New Hampshire. Because my job here in NH ends three weeks after his job in TN begins, we're driving two cars there and back. Since gas has gotten so expensive, I expect the whole $600 to be eaten up by gas and tolls for the four 1,200 mile trips, and the modest amount of commuting we have to do while down there."

  • Wow, now I have enough $ to survive, thanks.

"Even though I was looking forward to receiving my stimulus check for months, there was nothing to be happy about when I got it. It used to cost me $34 to fill up my gas tank, and as of yesterday, it cost me $58. I live 45 minutes away from "the real world" after my family had to move out to to the farther reaches of suburbia into a small town where, because of the lack of urbanization, housing is affordable, (with the cost of living going up, my family had to keep moving to be able to afford food, electricity and gas along with rent). Over time, this long drive + only being able to work part time because I'm a full time college student = severe debt. I only make $8.50 an hour, you times that by 20 hours a week, minus out car insurance, $58 tanks of gas, paying for $67 contact lense for astigmatism + groceries, etc.,. and you end up with a $1,200 credit card debt at 19 and a stimulus check that disappears as soon as it surfaces. What we all seem to overlook is that our government has distracted us with a minimal $300-$600 (on average) in order to keep our minds off the fact that either way, the cost of living is going up and pretty soon we all wont be able to afford to live.
