• Screwed Out of a Check.

"I was going to spend my stimulus check on new parts for my motorcycle. However, I dont get a stimulus check. I worked my butt off in '07, paid my taxes, and Uncle Sam took my money willingly. But being that I'm an 18 year old diabetic, my parents claimed me as a dependent, which completely disqualifies me for the check. Even though I'm a working adult and a Full time college student. Thank you very much congress for your generosity."

  • You might want to talk with your parents about that. It's not Congress' fault that your parents claimed you, chances are that your 'rents saved more money by claiming you than you would have gotten had they not claimed you. It's time to negotiate with them! (keeping in mind that they may be paying more than the stimulus amount for your education, I don't know your situation).

  • Thats the problem though, not even my parents get money for me. Being that I'm 18 it disqualifies them for getting money for me because the $300 for kids applies to children 17 and younger, meaning i paid my taxes and they keep the money. And I'm paying for the majority of my college by the way.

  • no, no. what poopyhead above means is that back when your parents filed their 2007 taxes and claimed you as a dependent, they were able to take a deduction that made $3,400 less of their total income taxable. at 25% tax rate, for example, that would've saved them $850. (i think? check out the IRS website to make sure).

of course, you might have received a bigger refund in addition to the $600 rebate if they hadn't claimed you as a dependent. hmm... looks like it's time to break out on your own.
