• Investing in our world

"I don't feel that the stimulus checks were a responsible solution to our country's challenges or our world's problems. I donated my entire check, splitting the $600 between Books for Africa, whose goal is to "end the book famine in Africa;" Youth Frontiers, an organization that is changing the way young people treat each other in schools; and a subsistence farmer in Burkina Faso with whom I became friends while in the Peace Corps."

  • Amazing - people just keep sending money out of our country when there are so many people in the US and probably in her own state that could use some assistance. Just think how many homeless and parentless children there are in the US - just like the little boy that was left at the WalMart!@

  • That is cool. You may also look into www.modestneeds.org right here in the USA. They help do everything from help grandparents afford to take care of their grandkids to buy hearing aids for the deaf.

  • I think that's great. You are a very lucky person that you didn't need the check to make ends meet.

  • My hat's off to you. Not only did you volunteer with the Peace Corps, but you're continuing to build bridges to other people and cultures. I agree that we should be doing more to build up our neighbors - not only is it the right thing to do, but it's in our enlightened self interest. A subsistence farmer in Africa isn't someone we can do much business with, and he just might have some Big Ideas that would make the world a better place down the road.

  • I can't believe the first comment--another ignorant flag waver. We are WORLD citizens--a child in Africa is equal to the child next door.
It's people like Kara that make the world--not just the U.S.--a better place to live.
I'm too selfish to be so altruistic...thank you for setting a good example for others to follow.

  • Kara Garbe, in a time where everyone is pressed for cash, I admire your courage and thoughtfulness to give away money by helping others. From my experience of helping others, I have seen that it takes great sacrifice and selflessness to give out whats yours, especially when you yourself arent quite rich and have many bills to take care of. Godbless sister!!

  • LD, There are certainly people in our country who suffer as well -- which is why I gave part of my check to an organization doing great work with US schools -- but I don't believe that people in the US are inherently any more worthy of help than are people in other countries. I feel lucky to have known many people who've inspired me with their generosity and I try to do my part when I can, as well.
