• Debt that doesn't go away

"My husband and I didn't get one. he had taken out a student loan some years previous and due to a job loss had to put it on deferment. Except they never deferred the payment. It went into default and Uncle Sam Garnishes his wages and takes OUR tax returns/Stimulus checks. Also, when we call for a balance, it seems the payments are never applied...the balance goes up even after paying over 400$ monthly and 3500 in Rebates and the supposed stimulus check...where is that money going? "

  • Lori, pay the IRS via their online payment module. That way you can see every month where your money went. Keep calling them. Sometimes they apply the money you send them to the wrong years debts!!! (been there, done that). Also, if you can pay it all off you can ask for a refund of your penalties. Keep calling until you get somebody knowledgeable that will give you the RIGHT answers.

  • Lori, fax a request to the Treasury Dept. to provide you with a listing of all garnishments and tax offsets you've had include all years your requesting, you and your husbands names, address, SSI's and both of your signatures. They will send you a list of offsets which will help you ascertain where your money is going. Call the Treasury Dept. and they will provide you with the fax #.

  • I hear you. I recently got a consolidation call and they had no idea I was paying 25% of my income to pay these loans. They wanted me to pay almost 100% of my income to them. I told them if they stopped taking the 25% we could talk. Have not heard from them for quite some time.

  • Dont feel bad I didnt get mine either. The student loan people have garnished my wages, took my income tax returns for the past 6 years, and now they took the rebate check too. I really could have used that money. I was planning on getting my teeth fixed with it, but I cant now. I think alot of people got screwed over this. These government agencies should not be allowed to take the rebate checks. This is how the government got out of paying the rebate checks to probably thousands or more people. I live by self and live paycheck to paycheck. I have no help, so I was really counting on that rebate check. As far as the student loans go, I wouldnt recommend anyone to get one. As far as calling them and asking for the information, forget that, they were susposed to send me information on my student loans 6 months ago. Everytime I call them I get the run around.

  • So you should be exempt from paying off your student loans? What about the rest of us? I pay mine every month. If you take out a loan you are expected to pay!
