• Sorry to be so critical but how is that teaching your preteen daughter the value of a dollar. If she got this much for an 8th grade dance, imagine what she is going to expect for her senior prom! When she is older she will likely go into debt getting her hair done and buying outfits. Also, couldn't $200 have bought a more modest age appropriate dress?

• Just to respond...the $200 included the hair, shoes, nails and dress. I was not excited about the dress but it looked cute and my daughter was one of the modest dressed girls at the dance, believe it or not. As far as teaching her the value of the dollar, she had to wait until we had the cash in hand to do this and if we didn't have the cash she would not have gotten these items. To her these were a luxury items. Oh, you can tell from my 1985 firebird with 160,000 miles that we keep things nice and until they can't be used anymore. Yes, that is t-tops!

• My sister & I got our hair done a few weeks ago for my wedding and it cost us $110!! And formal dresses are pretty pricey too... I think she looks cute - I love pink. But those shoes don't go with that dress...

• man you people are rediculous! $200 is below average for what I think people now spend on school dances. When I was in eight grade (6 years ago) I know I could not find a decent dress for under $70. Maybe getting her hair and nails done were a little over the top but she got the extra money and Im sure every mother wants to spoil their daughters and help them be even more beautiful on a special day.
  
  And for whoever said they shudder to think what she would spend on her wedding day...what, do you think 200 is a good price for a wedding? Ha try in the multiple thousands.
  
  BTW Joan your daughter looks beautiful and I don't see anything wrong with that dress. Are these people expecting her to wear an ankle length dress with sleeves? Times have changed and unfourtunatly that is a pretty modest dress.

• I don't see what the difference is on whether this person spent money making her daughter feel great when she went to her dance and anything else we spent ours on. This money was supposed to go to us and we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted with it so why is everyone attacking her? When I was in 8th grade, I had to rummage through my closet and wear something I already had. I would have loved if my mom could have done something like this for me. As for the value of a daughter, there are so many kids that are pampered and spoiled to the tune of way more than $200. (Ever see that Super Sweet 16 show? I mean come on!)
