The gift that keeps giving
"I took my $600 and lent it to Kiva, splitting it between four individuals. Patricia (above) is one of the recipients. She's entering the taro farming business in Samoa and will use the money to purchase weed killer, pesticides, tools, seeds and fertilizer. The best part is that once the loans are paid back I can reinvest the money and it will keep giving and giving."

What I didn't use for paying off credit card bill, went to Kiva. First time, will see how it goes! Saw it on PBS special months ago and have been waiting for some extra $. YAY...It is a wonderful idea.

A website that I heard about a while ago give you a way to give a helping hand to a specific person for a specific need.
Modest Needs its called. Of course its a donation and not a loan, but then maybe its a tax write off, where as Kiva might not be since its just a loan?

Great idea though! If I had my consumer credit card debt paid off I would consider one of these as well.

This is exactly what I'm doing with mine, too--using it to fund people on Kiva. I figure it's a drop in the bucket here, maybe a few tanks of gas at best. Why not put to use where it's enough to make a real difference? And it was the best way I could think of to stick it to the crooks who gave it to me. I don't like bribes.
